What is the most important thing you have learned so far this year? How can you apply this knowledge to your life?

The most important thing I have learned so far this year is to think outside of the box and to try not to be surface on everything I do. I have found that if you think beyond the surface of things you can really get more out of the subject.!!!

kaylanicole_class2010 said...

I would have to agree with Kashera on this one. Most of my writing from last year and years before has been shallow. You have to told me more than once to look deeper into what I was writing. I believe that is the best advice I have ever been given for writing.

Little one said...

I agree that is sound advice, but I learned that you must first know the box before you can think out of it.

Victoria Marie said...

The most important thing I learned was correct grammer. The way you speak will help you later on in life. To something that I should have known earlier in life, I am just now grasping a hold of a more sophisticated self.

Victoria Marie said...

I would also like to agree with Kashera on "thinking outside of the box". It will make you better comprehend the meanings of diffrent writers, and understand where thier coming from. Although I think grammer is more important, if you didn't have good grammer, how could you get deeper into surface.

the most important thing i have learned so far is how to express your feelings in your writing, and how to go beyond just the main topic. Then like Kashera said to think out of the box.I have learned that people will enjoy your writting more if it has more of you in it.Also, it not being done cause you have to but because you want to.

sarahbellanova_{: said...

The most important thing I have learned this year to have fun with English. In the past, I would just need to read deep enough to find a literary element, but with you we have to read so deep, it is fun.

Amberly said...

The most important thing that I have learned so far this year is how to be more specific about a subject. In class, I find myself digging deeper into the subject before me and then I understand it more than I ever have. After I do this, the story is so much clearer than it was before.

Righteous-Judgement said...

The most important thing I have learned this year, is that an ignorant statement is a useless and unarguable statement.... ^^' Being too generic gives me a degree of nausea, but I have to agree with Kashera,.... but in spite of my conformity, I must confess.... Thinking outside the box was a skill available to many of us since english 2...... Even still, this year has helped me to excentuate and exercise my skills.

Jessie faye said...

I completely agree with Kashera but the most important thing I have learned this year is how to write a good paper. I have learned to take your time and think about what your doing and have other peole read your paper because you can't always see your mistakes.

I would have to say that so far the most important thing ive learned is how there is more to every story than whats on the surface. I've been told to read deeper since like eigth grade or so but i never really understood the text good enough to get past that first layer until this year. Now im starting to get deeper into it though at times i still have no idea what its even saying on the surface. So its still a learning process... BUT i am improving.

KiNSER© said...

I'm totally going to go in the opposite direction. I've learned many important things so far this year. Some about school and some about life. I agree with kashera thinking out of the box is important but i must say that what I've learned is different. I've learned not to judge people just because of what they look like or what they say. You must get to know that person before you can judge them. In school I also have learned to write better, I've learned that you need to be specific about your topic and not choose many of them.

Pidgeotto 1926 U.S. Open Golf Championship Party! said...

The most important thing I have learned this year is that you have to patient. I can't rush through my junior year not studying anymore. Got to buckle down. Obviously, this is a great character trait.

Brad said...

I will have to go a different direction than Kashera. The most important thing I have learned so far this year is to not think of school as a place where everything is nothing but work. I have learned to look on the bright side of things. With this attitude I believe that not only will I be successful in school, but also in life after college.

snorlaxxx said...

The single most important thing that has been imparted into my knowledge banks thus far into the semester is not actually a school lesson, it's actually a lesson of commitment to what i have signed up for. I was under the impression that my junior year would pass by like years past, without studying once, but so far just in the first six weeks i have had to work harder than last year all together. This lesson will help me in life because it will show me, when the time comes, to burn the midnight oil and put true effort into whatever it is that im doing.

Little one said...

Ryan is Right. This year has been the hardest yet, and if what the teachers are telling us is true it is only going to get harder from here on out.

MiKaLa = ) said...

What I have learned this year is like others have said, to think outside the box when you are writing. There is always going to be a bigger picture we just have to go outside our level of thinking sometimes. That thought also pertains to real life, and I'm trying to practice it in writing and in my own life.

Caitlynn said...

I agree with Kashera and Chelsea. I have not only learned things about English, but also about life. I've learned that in order to actually read a book the right way, and learn what the author is saying is by looking the past the surface. Another thing is not to judge someone just by what they say once or twice, you need to get to know them better before you make such assumptions.
:)

The most important thing I have learned so far this year is that you need to have a plan for everything. I mean, here I am, a Junior in High School and I dont even know what I would like to do with the rest of my life. I've realized I need to start thinking through life a lot more and to begin to have a plan for what is to come.

This could help in life in many ways... just like I said, like planning out where I want to go to college, or what I want to go to college for.

CALLiE ViCTORiA =]] said...

I would have to agree with Corrissa. The most important thing that I have learned so far this year is how to express my feeling in my writing and go beyond the topic. But not only have I learned things that points towards english but also things that can just point to life itself. I have a lot of life lessons this year and I'm sure there will be more to come.

I have learned not to to rely on other people to show you what to do. Just take what you are given and do your best, interpret in your own way. Give your own response. I also have to agree with the freak of baseball! I need to start planning for my life...

Aut Vincere Aut Mori said...

The most important thing that I have learned this year is don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something. If they say your not good enough show them your the best. If they say you can't go somewhere go all the way. Don't let other people tell you what you can and can't do cause if you believe in yourself you can do anything.

Becca!!! said...

Ok this year, I have learned that I should not be at the center of what I do. I mean, yes I should consider the benifits I myself will reap from the choices I make, but at the same time, I must realize that there is a huge world out there, and that if I made even just a small effort, I could greatly impact someone else's life besides just my own. And honestly, that is a much better way to spend my time.

Becca!!! said...

haha now I have to comment on someone else's post, right?
Ok so...aut vicere aut mori said "don't let anyone tell you you can't do something" and that is so true! In the past, I really relied on what others thought about me, and what my friends, or whoever, thought I should be doing, or saying, or whatever. And this is so far off base to how life should be living! We should be living each day as if it is our last, and holding nothing back.

Sorry that all my comments are so long, I'm longwinded...sort of

Shenanigans said...

The most important thing I have learned so far this year is realizing that I need to know what my priorities are. I have a job and we are always short on employees so I end up working late hours. This has really stressed me out, especially with all the homework from this class! I've realized that having a job is not the most important thing right now, school is. I've also learned that I can't procrastinate and get behind. That is definitely the worst thing EVER in a college class!

I also agree with Caitlynn. I've learned that it's important to understand what the author means in his/her writing. Otherwise, you're basically reading for nothing.

I think that the most important thing i've learned this year is reading between the lines in a piece of literature. Reading just what's on top and taking literal meaning of everything paints a simple picture in your mind but going deeper into the story and finding out what the author really means and is trying to say creats a totally different and more interesting image

Ben said...

The most important thing I have learned so far this year is that unfortunately I can not sleep through all my classes and still get an A or even pass for that matter. The material is much harder then I could have imagined, especially in Pre-Cal, and it is actually forcing me to think about what I'm doing and not slack off. This is isn't a lesson I neccesarily enjoy learning but I can see how it will be beneficial. I won't be able to slack off in college or in job that i actually care about and i can look at this as a sort of preperation for later on in life.

-Waylon- said...

The most important thing I have personally learned this year is not to settle for ok work. I have learned to go above and beyond my horizon.

Becca!!! said...

alright, I said "this is so far off base to how life should be living" ummm that doesnt make sense.. What I meant was this is so far off base to how life should be lived.

Sorry :)

I also agree with Jessica when she says the most important thing she's learned is how to write a good paper. All those vocabulary pages and tests have help us expand our vocabulary which helps us to use more interesting words to draw the reader in. The advice we get from Mrs. Sunday also benifits us tremendously because she shows us where we went wrong and how to fix it and do better the next time around. THANKS MRS. SUNDAY!!!

alibee* said...

The most imporatant thing i have learned this year is to "JUST WRITE!" Sometimes you are not told exactly what to write, you are just given a topic. You just have to take what you are given and do your best with it and make it your own!

Unknown said...

So far, this year I've learned to take judgement as a good thing and not take comments too personally. It's really hard for me to not take someone's opinion personally because english is my passion and this year it's really been beneficial to me to let everyone read and check my papers. I've begun to try to look at my papers from a different perspective and try to use that to my advantage.

alibee* said...

I also agree with MiGHTY EAGLE NiNJA WARRiOR! This year I have learned not to rely on others to help you write your paper! and I agree with her that you have to interpret things in your own way to make your paper stand out from everyone elses!

Unknown said...

I like Ali's post and strongly agree. Sometimes, you're prompt may be to just write. That's always been hard for me to do because I've felt i've always needed some sort of guideline as to what I'm supposed to write about. And sometimes, all you're required to do is simply write.

Danielle said...

The most important thing that I have learned is that you absolutely have to take one day at a time. This is such a busy time in all of our lives, and we have a lot of planning to do. I'm not necessesarily saying not to plan ahead, because you should, but when you get so caught up in what's coming up next in life, you ignore what is going on right in that moment. Eventually, you may regret being so caught up in the future that you did not appreciate the present. That is exactly what I want to do this year: just take things slow.

kylt2010 said...

I dont beleive i have learned one big important thing but many small important things. Like planning ahead...not just reading the surface of things...and to write papers that really mean something to us.

JP® said...

The most important thing I have learned how to do this year is to slow down and think before you react. I have applied this to my life and it works out really well!!!

kylt2010 said...

I dont beleive that you always have to read beneath the surface of something to understand it. Sometimes if you read to deep you get to thinking to much and completely miss the whole point of the book.

Danielle said...

I also agree with aut vincere aut mori. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to prove that you can do something no one thought you could do. It's a great self-esteem booster!

JP® said...

I would have to agree with Kayla and Kashera. Mrs. Sunday really helped when she told us to go deeper in our papers.

Unknown said...

I have to agree with Amberly. I really need to start digging deeper into a subject, and not just accepting what is on the surface. Always ask yourself WHY???

Sims2010 said...

I don't think I have learned much of anything important this year. I know that I need to start figuring out what I want to do for the rest of my life, but I don't have a clue.

Luli said...

I've learned a lot of awesome stuff this year, like always being prepared to eat a cold lunch if you come to the cafeteria to find the microwave locked up in the cheer room, or that fence cups really hurt your fingers after you've been doing them for over 45 minutes straight. However, one of the most important things I've learned this year is how to make use of the marvelous and terribly clever invention known as the flash drive. I was forced to purchase one for Mrs. Fernandez's class to do a power point, and now I am unlocking their true potential for the first time. I feel very behind technologically because everyone else had already had one for 100 years before I'd even heard of them. I guess that's what I get for growing up old school.

Shenanigans said...

I completely agree with Ali's post about "just write it." When we got our first paper, I was stressing out because I didn't know what Mrs. Sunday expected, but then I remembered her story about "just write it". That was definitely an important lesson!

Jessie faye said...

I have to agree with Waylon you can't settle for ok you have to do your best. The best paper you will ever write will be when it comes from deep down and you don't half way write it. No one will ever know your potential until you give it your best shot. I've learned not to write just because the teacher said to but because I want to and my papers will much better.

alexxx. said...

Hi. My name is Alex Duran and...I'm an alcoholic. Wait, wrong thing.

The most important thing I learned so far this year is that you can't take everything so seriously. People fight, friends argue, best friends grow apart...these are all changes that we have to get accustomed to. I also learned that it's hard to let something like this go because we care so much about other people. It hurts us so much that it interferes with our school work, and the hardest part of it all is trying to find the balance between emotional problems and your thinking, otherwise you will be lacking in your school work.

I agree with what "Taco" said. Show true expression in your writing otherwise it's like you are writing for someone else. We all have changes in our lives that affect how we think and act, and if we show that through our writing, it will give the reader a better understanding of ourselves and our purpose.

Unknown said...

Like Kashera said, looking at things from a differnt point of view is probably the most important thing I have learned this year. I have learned to apply that not only to literature and writing but also life. I've learned that if you look at things from a different perspective, you get so much more out of things than when you just look at it from your point of view.

Unknown said...

There is many things i have learned this year. The most important one is that whenever you are writting an essay you have to make it YOUR paper and write about YOUR point of view not somebody else's. I also learned that if you do that your paper is going to be much better plus it's going to be easier for you to write it.

Unknown said...

Ok I'm a little confused because I've never blogged before but I think I'm doing it right(I think).Ok I think I have to comment on someone else's post. Well what the baseball freak said it totally true because for real, I am a junior in high school and I have no idea what to do with the rest of my life! I feel so pressured about trying to decide where to go and what to do in such short time because I feel that I don't have much time. Anyways that's something else I've learned.Don't procrastinate!:p:D:p

Unknown said...

I agree with "fanatic" that there is always more to a story that whats on the surface. like she said i never payed attention to them until mrs. sunday told us about it.I also agree with kashera you have to think outside the box and go beyond your imagination.

Unknown said...

I was reading through the different comments and I came across Waylon's.Nice, man. Pretty deep. It speaks to me.:p I totally agree because one cannot be settling for "ok" work all the time.It is and English HONORS class and must be treated like one! I'm not trying to get preachy, I'm just trying to make a point.I see people walk in and expect everything to be easy so they don't try but when they don't make the grade they want, they complain. Anyways like I said, I'm not trying to write a sermon, just speaking my mind!;D

Brandon said...

You know I really think the best thing I have leaned is how to write a thesis statement. It helps you tell the audience or a person what you are going to tell them. I know I'm bound to have to say some kind of speech (in the future) in front of some people, and with out knowing how to establish a clear thesis I wouldn't be able to make sure that the people that I am talking to know what I am talking about.

Stephie said...

There are a lot of things that I have learned so far. Most of it will be beneficial with the choice of carrier I have in mind. But out of everything, the one thing that stands out the most is to have to responsibility of getting things done and in a timely manner. We have lazy freshman this year and as a result things are not getting done or better. So I decided to take things into my own hands. That way everything is done and if they didn’t help then it is their heads on the line not mine

When I entered high school, I became friends with upperclassmen who had jobs, cars and a life outside of school. With that came the huge weight of responsibility. I would watch my friend, Robyn, (or Liz as she’s known to most), struggle with jobs, car payments and advanced classes while at the same time grasping for anything resembling a social life. I could see with my little freshman eyes that it was hard—harder than anything I’d ever experienced.
Now, I’m the upperclassman. Over my past months as a junior I have faced more trials and more exhaustion than ever in my life. I come home from school at three, go to work at five and come back home around nine. The rest of my night is spent on homework, writing articles for the school newspaper and attempting to fall asleep by midnight. It’s demanding and I despise waking up in the morning to do it all over again, but I know I’m learning something. I might still be in high school, but with the work I do every day, I’m an adult right now and no one can tell me different.

aut vincere aut mori has got right. I have had to prove to myself many times over that because someone wants me to change or wants me to fit into a mold of their own, it's impossible. I actually like myself sometimes. I want to be happy in the things I create and do.

And if anyone tells me that writing will get me nowhere, I've got a speech in my back pocket, kid.

The most important thing I have learned since I was in Mrs. Sunday's class was that I need to stop putting things off til last minute. If I have homework that due in two days, I need to do it the night it was assigned, not the night before it was due.

Sims2010 said...

I agree with Amberly that you need to dig deeper into things to completely understand them, though like Kyle said you can think somethings through too much.

kaylanicole_class2010 said...

I also agree with Jessica. I have learned how to take my papers from blah to good. And, slowly I am learning how to take them from good to hopefully one day great!!!! The first way i learned how to do that is by thinking outside of the box, and digging deeper into the subject at hand. Every paper you write should be the best it can be. You need to take the subject to a whole new level that no one has ever even though of.

And, I also agree with Kinser. Mrs. Sunday has taught us in more than one how to not judge people. It is very easy to judge a book by its cover, but with every story that we have read Mrs. Sunday ties it into the fact that someone judged someone else without really knowing the person. And, everytime she tells us how bad that is.

I have already learned so much this year and I can't wait to see what the rest of the year holds for me!!!

CHRiSTAKAY:) said...

In the past years, you might be able to get by a test or something without studying. But its very different this year. Its not fun but it will definitely help us in the future.

I also agree with Victoria on her comment about the grammar. Using correct grammar will get you further in life than using incorrect grammar. when you use incorrect grammar people look at you like you are insipid and like your words have no value but if you use correct grammar it makes people actually want to listen to what you have to say and it makes them think you are worth listening to

Luli said...

Along with learning the about the wonderful world of flashdrives, I agree with what Nelcy said about making a paper your own. I always try to put things into my own words and ideas as much as posible when ever I'm writing. This helps me to realize my true writing potential.

I would have to agree with ryan. Pretty much all my life, minus a couple classes, i've been able to pass without having to study to hard. This year though has not been like that whatsoever.
